Caminando Con Toni

cover2

Toni and I visited the Camino de Santiago in 2013 with Road Scholar.  The following summer we were making plans to walk the whole Camino together when we learned that Toni’s cancer had returned, and spread to her liver.  She died May 28, 2016.  Now I am walking the Camino.

Toni is with me.

Toni is not with me. Profoundly, palpably, not with me.

I am carrying her ashes.  She is with me.

Like most blogs, this is in reverse chronological order, most recent entries first.  To read the blog from the beginning, I recommend you click here.

  1. I remember you & Toni doing a presentation in Spanish about your adventures on the Camino and having a student remark that you were the most amazing “old people” ever. I think you both laughed as she quickly said, well, not old, but older than me. And she was right. You and Toni were an amazing couple and you still are. Que goces del camino y que las memorias dulces te rodeen suavemente. Toni sí está contigo, siempre.

  2. Hi Chris, Hannah here, we met a few times out at Faun Lake, and Neill & I loved hearing the tales from the most recent adventures you and Toni had been on since the previous time we’d seen you.

Rita put up the link to the blog, and I look forward to reading all about your travels. Despite coming from England, I have never been to this part of Spain – my only knowledge of this trail comes from the movie starring Martin Sheen ‘The Way’, so thanks for the ‘About The Camino’ section too.

Not sure of the right words here, it’s sad you are undertaking this adventure alone, but amazing that you are able to carry out a trip you were both looking forward to, with memories from previous visits to accompany you, in a place that you already felt such a spiritual connection to.

Hope you don’t mind me including a few lines that meant a lot to me when I lost a family member
    ‘When you are sorrowfull
    look again in your heart
    and you shall see that
    in truth you are weeping
    for that which has
    been your delight’
    Kahlil Gibran

Safe travels, look forward to the next installment!
